I just received my periodic SFBC mailing. Two things of note: first, the hardback edition of "Kiln People" (#153262) is on sale for $5.00. Quite a bargain. Also Greg Bear's "Vitals" (#146423) is $5.00.
Second, in one of the many additional flyers included in the package, there are two omnibus editions of B5 novels. One is "The Passing of the Techno-Mages" by Jeanne Cavelos (contains: "Casting Shadows", "Summoning Light", and "Invoking Darkness."
The other is Peter David's "Legions of Fire" ("The Long Night of Centauri Prime", "Armies of Light and Dark", and "Out of the Darkness"). Are either of these two trilogies worth reading?
I'd better say upfront that I'm not really a devoted fan of B5 and I haven't read any of the books related to the series... but Peter David wrote a bunch of excellent books for the Trek universe that I read a few years ago. He's definitely not on a Brin-intellectual level, but I'd feel comfortable recommending his work.
If his B5 books are anything like what he did for TNG, expect well-fleshed-out characters that sound a lot like their onscreen counterparts as well as multiple, innovative and interacting storylines. He has a good sense of humor too.
I just bought season one of B5 on DVD and should get to it one of these days. ;)
