I must have missed the announcement when the RC church became a democracy ... the RC church is not controlled by North American catholics. It never will be. If you want a more liberal church you'll have to have a schism and set up an American Pope :)
There's always Pope Wally, the Lutheran pope, in Minnesota. Lake Wogebon, I believe, is is home town.
