        I cradle a baby on the left side so that my right hand is
free.  (Until the left arm gets tired, then I switch...)

        I think the reason (American, at least) boys carry them on their
hips is to look like other boys.  Growing up, I got the impression that
carrying books on the chest was considered "faggy", back when there 
was a stigma attached to it.
