I know what department they're from, what classes they teach, which staff room they live in, and chat about their family, home, holiday etc, but in the end I have to admit my failure and ask their name so I can call up the account. I used to ask them how they spell it, but too many "j-o-n-e-s" or "c-h-a-n" episodes later I gave up on that.

Reminds me of a funny story from James Herriot's All Creatures Great And Small:

He's a new veternarian in the English countryside, and he sometimes had trouble
remembering his customer's names if he came across them in town. Almost all
the local surnames have at least one E in them, so he's told if he can't remember,
to just ask the person if they have one or two E's in their name, and then they'd
spell it out and he wouldn't be embarassed to admit he couldn't remember it.

So he tries out the trick one day, and the guy looks at him funny and says: "S - M - I - T - H. Smith."
