Machiavelli invented the modern Republic in a very real sense (he wrote a lot more than The Prince, and The Prince doesn't necessarily mean what people think it means, either, although I'm betraying my latent Straussian influence there). Malthus's ideas were one of the major inspirations for Charles Darwin, I believe.
