I'm guessing that you haven't had dealings with a lot of people in
business lately.
A number of my friends are *required* to do top-posting and leave all
the crap below for their work e-mails. They have brought this habit
into their personal e-mails, which bugs the heck out of me, and I've let
them know this. Doesn't always stop them.
I agree that it's highly irritating. But to say it's never acceptable
in *any* e-mail ignores a trend that many businesses are adopting. (And
that may be what a certain business package that includes e-mail expects
you to be doing.)
Personally, I would very much prefer that nobody did top-posting for
their participation on this list. So if you value my opinion of you,
that's one thing you should strive to avoid. :)
