Those who reject this sub-meme often go the whole nine yards. They believe that those who believ differently are literally damned to eternal torment. They believe that environmentalists who love God's beautiful Earth are agents (literally) of Satan. Yes, they are a minority. Even a small minority. I laugh at my European friends and lefties who paranoically rave that America is about to become a fanatical religious state. Ain't gonna happen. The sub-meme is far stronger. BUT the right-wing kleptos have found Christian mantras to be very efficient at distracting from their real goal... short term theft of trillions. By putting forward some of these "the world is gonna end anyway so chop em all down, hallelujah!" dopes to draw fire, the real masters can proceed with their business of grabbing every public good and selling it for personal profit. Best example is "hydrogen power." Now I have written in EARTH & other novels about futures when cars run on hydrogen, so why do I call W's H2 initiative a scam? Because there is no way on God's green Earth that we can create a car-economy that could run on H2 within 2 decades -- the infrastructure for distributing that fuel (even if you could make enough) to a zillion feuling stations will be impossible for 20 years. But that's not their goal. Their goal is: 1) SEEM like we're a-doing something. SO take all the money from conservation and renewables (which would hurt the oil biz) and hand it over TO oil companies to spend on "research" that will go nowhere. 2) and if/when it does go somewhere, our oil pals will derive all the benefit from the public funds spent creating this new infrastructure. It is one more among 50 Great Lies. Like Weapons of Mass Destruction. Or hiding the fact that W was on the presidency's LONGEST -ever vacation when 9/11 hit. Or trying to smirch Kerry's heroic war record. Dang, but this ain't the GOP of Barry Goldwater. Maybe someday it will be again.
