Something else. I think the Repubs would reject him as being too liberal, and the Dems would reject him as being too much a "man of the people" (hick, rustic). And a bit of an ironfist -- he was willing to ignore the Constitution in the name of keeping the Union whole.
Actually I don't think he could get elected today. Self-educated originally, but clearly pretty intelligent -- and many, MANY American voters are afraid of electing anyone brighter than they are. The anti-intellectual streak in this country is sickening.
No idea which party he'd pick, but at a guess I'd say none o' th'above.
