Overall, its my impression that the average soldier in uniform (i.e. the enlisted, perhaps the field-grade officers) tenatively support the conflict. One of the comments I've seen recently, and increasingly, is that western Media doesn't show the whole story. By that I don't mean the sort of spin Al-jazeera puts on newsstories, but rather what the soldiers are doing for Iraq when they're not fighting. Like in Vietnam, we are trying to reconstruct/improve the country, and the sort of interaction soldiers have with the Iraqi civilians. However, beyond that, the point brought up by someone (I don't recall who) about extended enlistments is important. And while the troops in-country for the most part believe in what they're doing, there are plenty not deployed yet that don't want to go. Morale is one of those things as a soldier is easy to identify, but hard to categorize or explain. There are a few different "types," and the morale to fight, the self-confidence to take and sieze objectives, isn't impacted as much.
