Well, George H.W. Bush was the youngest Navy pilot of
the Second World War and won the DFC, which counts as
pretty heroic.  Eisenhower did pretty well as well,
most people think.  Both Republicans.  Truman served
with distinction in the First World War, although I
can't remember the details of his service in action
itself.  Going back before that you have a whole list
of people in the Civil War, of course (all
Republicans), and Andrew Jackson in both the
Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and George
Washington, the first of them all, "First in war,
first in peace, and first in the hearts of his
countrymen."  That was before the Republican Party was
even founded.
