Wow, that's a jailable offence here. If you don't know how to vote,
you have to take it to a scrutineer and ask their help, then go back
to the booth. No-one is allowed NEAR the booth if there is someone in
it. (Mind you, we still use pencils and paper...)
Like being asked to show ID, it seems to vary by polling place here.
My wife and I were both surprised to find the touch-screen voting
stations in our precinct set up like this, so that it was way too
easy to look past your machine and see the screen of the machine
in front of you:
