Nick the Hypocrite
There was once a notorious thief who wanted to reform his ways. But he was having trouble. He stole all the time, compulsively, uncontrollably.
He asked an itinerant monk for help. The monk told him, "Next time you feel an urge to steal, be aware of it."
"And how do I sop myself from following the urge?" the thief asked.
The monk smiled. "Don't worry about that. Only be aware of the urge."
The thief agreed to give it a try.
A year later the monk was in the same province again and enquired of the thief what progress he had made.
The man had reformed; he was a thief no more.
