To me something like "My heart goes out to this or that group…" is a little like "I'm praying for this or that group…" It just doesn't carry the weight with me that it might with others, so I tend not to say such things. It's not for lack of caring; it's because I know that sometimes words just don't help.

And those who believe that prayer does work believe that it works just as well when said in private rather than in public. (q.v. Matt. 6:4)

Glad you self-corrected there. ;)

That's part of it too. Public displays of affectation [sic] don't impress me; they seem another form of unseemly grandstanding. Coming from someone who *was* and is directly affected, that's one thing; but I'm 1500+ miles away, the storm simply didn't touch me or anyone known to me. So anything I might have to say about how tragic it was is really … it's just not relevant.

I would guess that those who do believe in the efficacy of prayer have probably been doing some of it in the time they are not on-line . . .

And, likely, not announcing it. Seems to me that prayer is one of those intensely personal things — when it's being done in earnest — that has absolutely nothing to do with interacting with the outside world. It's not done on camera; it's not done before crowds with grimaces and gesticulations; it's not proclaimed or declared; it's a deep, quiet consultation with something far beyond petty concerns of ego.
