Never understood why some people are afraid of spiders...
The problem we have around here are those big black ants. Sometimes
they get in the house through the venting, but a paper dowel and a
little squishy between my fingers takes care of that. Those guys are
the only insects I don't catch and release outside (yes, I catch
spiders and take them out to the porch and into some bushes there
adjacent).
Oh, man, I would take those big black ants in a *heartbeat* in exchange
for having the fire ants disappear....
My cousin, the entomologist, would grab insects and spiders in a loose
fist and toss them out the window. *Except* for mosquitos -- those he'd
kill. :)

p.s. btw, a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol works reasonably well as a
contact insecticide, and the residue is safer than the residue left by a
lot of things marketed as insecticides -- a combination of ant traps,
keeping food off the floor as much as possible (toddlers!) and spraying
when there were a lot of ants milling around took care of a particularly
insidious ant problem inside of a week
