Actually I saw no generational comparison. The earliest date we can put on any reference of his in that mail is 1991, and 15 years do not denote a generational change. I thought he was pointing out that the US has faced far greater threats with more equanimity, and not even all that long ago. Nothing about earlier generations being more stoic than the current one.
