We have had similar regrets, but have been pleasantly surprised at how
(relatively) healthy our lawn remains despite a rigorous program of
failing to water it regularly. Then again, I have given up almost half
my lawn to Bermuda grass, which we thought we had eradicated when we
put in a more "desirable" bluegrass blend...

Here in California, it is difficult to sell a property that does not
have a healthy-looking lawn in front, despite the fact that this
introduced species does nothing useful except support property values.

I don't know how long it will take to change that formulation, or if,
indeed, it will be possible. Perhaps dramatic changes in climate and
more frequent, deeper droughts will force our hand.
