Agreed. To expand on this idea, I believe that the tour/nationals season should be condensed to 2-2.5 months. This would lead to a higher level of play as it's impossible to keep form over the 6 months of the current calendar. Teams would practice intensely before the season and then make small adjustments between events.
Furthermore, I'd like to see a change in the timing of the tour (open, women's, and mixed) next year. The basic idea is that the mixed tour would occur from April through June 15. The women's and open tours would then be run side by side from the middle of June through the end of August. Mixed is a great vehicle to promote so many aspects of the game, and it deserves it's own season. First and foremost, mixed has been responsible for the majority of female participation and improvement (although the effort of the women's tour this year has been commendable). Mixed is a great, social environment and will draw new players towards the game for them hopefully to continue on with the open and women's tour later in the year. On the flip side, from my own personal experience, I think mixed teaches younger male players a lot about the nuances of the game as well as body control (not crushing women who weight 2/3rd of what you do when you make a bid). Finally, as spirit in this country is highest on the mixed front, it's a shame that the mixed game at the club level is going into decline. I've received nothing but positive feedback for this idea from a wide range of the ultimate playing public.
