What I would like to see is a little more consistency from the BUSA rules. The
fact that because regionals don't carry any BUSA points so the old eligibilty
rules apply should be scrapped or at least clarified. We have to have a uniform
set of eligibilty rules for all tournaments in the University calendar. This
should include mixed at least in my opinion. Women's perhaps not as it might
not be strong enough yet, particularly outdoors.
Liam, When would we have these BUSA qualifying events? What purpose would
splitting the tournaments in this manner than to clog up an already busy Uni
Calendar and massaging the egos of the teams that woud have done a little
better with their star players? Who would host them? Getting a venue for DIV2
Nationals sounds like it was painful enough. It sounds like regression to me to
introduce these tournaments. It feels like we'll be saying we want to progress
but we don't want to let go of our best players that could - if they want - set
up their own teams in their own institutions. No-one is being denied the option
of playing If teams are desperate to field these players they can enter Open
Indoor Regionals. Get help from an established Uni team to help you set up a
new one in one of these institutions that doesn't have a team.
How does it benefit the sport if, come Uni nationals, there are some
comparatively weak teams there because their best players can't play? Wouldn't
the sport develop more if the 4th placed team at regionals with 'home grown
talent' got to go to nationals and really challenge themselves and the national
opposition?
This year, my Uni team gained a player from a nearby institution and, although
he isn't eligible, the advice and support he's passed on has been invaluable.
The team - as a whole - has improved. We aren't able to play a star player but
we're a better team. Sounds fair to me.
On another note, and it may be may own fault here, but I don't remember UKUA
announcing a change in the eligibility rules. Am I wrong? Could someone direct
me to the notice they made if there was one. If not, were Uni teams expected to
assume a change in the rules when we got enveloped by BUSA?
