Hi BD, This is a very interesting topic.
We've been trialling a spirit score league within collegiate Ultimate teams at Durham University this year using the old BULA sheet that scores teams out of 16. On the whole it has gone extremely well, but I've noticed the average score has been around 12.5/16 all year. Hayden's point is something we're going to explain to captains next year, in that the average score they award ought to be around 8/16 or 10/20 etc. This gives more meaning to the end result, especially to those with the highest and lowest scores. I don't think it means much when the top score over 10 games is 13/16 and the bottom only 11/16. Particularly in Durham we found that teams (generally those with little experience of spirit scoring, but sometimes just because they'd lost the score sheet and were lazy) would occasionally want to give "full marks" to teams after a fun game, even if aspects of the opposition's Spirit weren't great. Obviously this isn't the point of having a scoring system! It's fantastic if a team deserves 16/16, but when it's a 1st team giving 16/16 to their 2nd team... The main problem though with moving towards more centrally-weighted scoring is that it only really works if everyone does it! Personally though I think it's worth a try.
