Hi Dave,
OK, here is the method to active the EL40C's internal menu:
1. Remove the USB cable
2. Move the easy access bar down and to the right
3. Plug the cable back in
Now the display should show its current model. By moving the access bar left or right you can change it. The display can work as an EL S or an EL C. When you have the desired model, save the setting by pressing a routingkey + easy access bar up.
After that, I had to again unplug the cable and plug it back in.
This works for all EL C displays, certainly for the 40 and the 80.

Now the other row of routingkeys works to describe characters and the help display confirms that BRLTTY has recognised an EL40C.
