I don't know. You introduced this built-in viewer which never
introduced to me.
and it never showed up for me. There was always xpdf or xdvi opened
without my explicite wish. The only reasonable choice is texdoc, of
course!
Last time I looked, texdoc could not deal with source specials and had
special search paths wired in.

No. I instantly thought of customising since I knew what I am wishing
and what works, with or without special paths or applications to
handle a particular file format. That's the great advantage: make it
right once, and save time on the bug-auctex list!
