This is trickier than I thought. The best I could come up with (to avoid
changing the documentation of `preview-auto-reveal` and the concept of
"opening" a preview throughout) is:

Previews never obscure the source. In this mode, preview visibility is
inverted: previews are hidden when they would normally be closed and
made visible when they would normally be opened. The value of
@\code{preview-auto-reveal} controls when a preview is considered opened
(e.g., set to @code{t} to open a preview whenever the cursor enters the
preview's source).
