Excellent answer.
Jaime is right that this is quite similar to what the ddrescue manual
calls "automatic merging of backups". So I'm going to include this
example in the manual between example 4 (Rescue a CD-ROM in /dev/cdrom
from two copies) and example 5 (Rescue a lzip compressed backup from two
copies on CD-ROM).
