Translating GNU Backgammon to pt_BR

Hello!

Would you be interested in a translation of the project for Brazilian 
Portuguese? I am willing to work on and maintain it.

I cloned the project and read the ABOUT_NLS file, which says I should 
apply for the Portuguese translation team at the Translation Project 
(https://translationproject.org); GNU Backgammon, however, is not one of 
the packages listed on that website 
(https://translationproject.org/domain/index.html).

How should I go about it? Do I need to join the Translation Project in 
order to provide a translation? Also, do you recommend any relevant 
resources for translators, be it for GNU projects in general or for GNU 
Backgammon specifically? I found a message in this mailing list with 
some pointers 
(https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnubg/2023-03/msg00003.html), is 
there anything else?

Sorry for so many questions: I'm a software developer by trade, but I've 
never contributed to free software besides fixing some typos and I don't 
want to get in the way of your work.
