Thanks a lot, Kaoru! I created a symlink named gnubg.mo inside /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES to the pt_BR.mo file and I am now able to see the messages I've already translated.

I consider myself unblocked now.

I decided to try and install gnubg from the Debian repos. With this
installation, I still didn't find any language folders and this time I
cannot change the language using the GTK menu: I get an error pop-up
that reads "Locale 'es_ES.UTF-8' not supported by C library." when I
try to change it to Spanish (this message is logged in the console
when the software is ran with "gnubg -w").

The Debian package gnubg uses /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo.
Build gnubg.mo and copy to /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/

For exmaple:

   % msgfmt --verbose -o pt_BR.gmo pt_BR.po
   % sudo cp pt_BR.gmo /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
   % env LC_MESSAGES=pt_BR.UTF-8 gnubg

The translations included in gnubg-data-1.08.003-3.deb are as follows:
% dpkg -L gnubg-data|grep gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/cs/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/da/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/el/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/en_US/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/fi/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/is/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/ja/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/ro/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/ru/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
/usr/share/locale/tr/LC_MESSAGES/gnubg.mo
