I'm actually talking about a different problem. The new X11 system on
Leopard is completely different. One of the manifestations is that the
DISPLAY variable is no longer something simple like :0.0, it's more
like /tmp/launch-423445/:0 (or something like that). So the whole
parsing of the DISPLAY variable in the backend so we can open up the X
display is wrong.

I'm not sure wether there's documentation about this, but the long
term plan is to continue with the Cairo backend and to deprecate the
other backends. Cairo in turn has a Mac OS X / Quartz backend already.
