I see, one more AIQ (Apple Intended Quirk). With Cairo on top of
Quartz I'd expect there is no X11 involved at all, so for the future,
the contact surface possibly hit by additional/new AIQs is minimized.

I'm not sure wether there's documentation about this, but the long
term plan is to continue with the Cairo backend and to deprecate
the other backends. Cairo in turn has a Mac OS X / Quartz backend
already.
