    README-alpha is not a very obvious name either if you're 
    building from CVS.

True.  The purpose of README-alpha is to be a README file for people
trying test releases.

For information about development builds, I suggest a different file.  I
use README.dev.

I'll attach both files as I wrote them for Texinfo in case it's of any use.
