grep, like all GNU packages, should use the latest released config.*
files whenever a new distribution is made.  Ditto texinfo.tex.

useful conclusion was reached anyway (that I recall).

That's a pity. This sort of hacking around bugs really needs to be sorted out. My solution would be to stick with whatever files are shipped with the autotools, but I can see how that's not great for official GNU packages. Since I'm in the process of overseeing the contribution of a new program to GNU, this will soon become an issue for me, so I'm glad to have been made aware of it.
