Sorry, I can't exhume it now. This was years ago, and no particularly
useful conclusion was reached anyway (that I recall).
That's a pity. This sort of hacking around bugs really needs to be sorted
out. My solution would be to stick with whatever files are shipped with
the autotools, but I can see how that's not great for official GNU packages.
Since I'm in the process of overseeing the contribution of a new program to
GNU, this will soon become an issue for me, so I'm glad to have been made
aware of it.
