I think he refers to the final output of ping: --- lvs-vip-1.sys.kth.se ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 8.836/10.908/15.706/2.796 ms Being able to print that without exiting and re-starting ping may be useful, although it doesn't strike me as something extremely useful.
