Thanks for the input. It is apparently not a problem with metafont. Here
is the output from metafont.
It is also apparently not a problem when I call mf2pt1, either.
FONTFORGE=foo mf2pt1 feta20.mf gave a fine glyph.
FONTFORGE=fontforge mf2pt1 feta20.mf gave a distorted glyph, with fontforge
20100501 with --enable-double
Same with fontforge 20110222
