I assume that I made a mistake. I had 20100501 installed, and was getting
problems. I switched to 20110222 (using macports) and thought I still had
the problem. I may have not reloaded the font in fontforge.
To make a small example, I created a new directory and built a small font
like you asked, and there was no problem. So then I went back to the
original font, and there was still no problem.
I have confirmed in my lilypond directory by doing
rm mf/out/*
make
And both glyphs are correct in out/feta20.pfb.
So it appears that 20110222 works, and there is no bug report to file with
metafont.
