I did try using star for my situation. I was not able to get it to work
in Cygwin. I reported this to you and did not hear back. I have
switched back to trying to get this to work with GNU tar. I am now
trying by specifying a fixed tape length
tar -cv -i -M -L 157286400 -b 128 -f /dev/nst0 d/20050419 d/20050420
g/20050421
(I know that -M is implied by -L)
