    Multitable AFAIK requires you to split the text manually into different
    columns; latex's two-column option splits continuous text into multiple
    columns.  If there is a way to get multitable to do that, that's great.

I see.  No, there isn't.  I've wanted that feature myself more than once :).

I can't guess what might be going wrong without seeing the actual
texinfo file that's failing.
