With the patch, This still also requires a second, :443-only VH as the default/first-listed for *:443 as we revealed in a later comment (due to my intefering no less). Two vhosts for SSL and non-SSL is not revolutionary. I think a single vhost would be a good feature, and is similar to the non-LE mod_md stuff being discussed on dev@ (which you are required to post under an alias on because of your conflicts with people not named Eric Covener).
