It doesn't seem to make any difference in behaviour. I'd like to share some interesting observations I made while fiddling with xrandr. First, when a kernel is loaded with or without your patch, X11 starts with both monitors, VGA and DVI, presenting a duplicated login screen, without any "glitches". When I log in and my .xinitrc is loaded, the dual-head configuration is set up [1]. Without your patch, the DVI monitor stays dark and the VGA monitor displays "blurred" fonts, graphic artifacts and seems to be using a wrong geometry, since my xterm is "wider" than the actual resolution. When I redo the exact same steps to set up the dual-head config after everything is loaded out of xterm, the VGA screen looks correct, and the DVI screen stays dark. With your patch, all of the above applies exactly to this case, with the exception that the DVI screen is being used too. It's the correct configuration though the graphics have "glitches". When I call xrandr again, it shows correct output on both screens. In both cases, calling xrandr repeatedly reliably alternates between corrupted and correct output.
