I've had an atheros do something similar one time and reported on the list. A cold boot didn't work but swapping the card from one laptop to another and back did (likely time taken without power and not procedure). Maybe the onboard micros screw up their memory or something and the upgrade procedure gave it enough power down time or power resets to sort it? In any case I would wait for additional reports?
