Hi all,

Last year in May, i wrote to bugs@ about vmm VMs having slow time[1].
Mike Larkin replied that this was a known issue[2], so I mostly
ignored it, thinking things would improve over time.  And indeed they
have: these days, the play VM I have on my home workstation runs time
at normal speed.

So I set about building another VM on another machine.  Here time
seems to run slower again, but I don't really understand why.  Of
course, the hardware of the host machines differs; my workstation uses
an i7-4770, the server with the slow VM runs on a Xeon E31260L, full
dmesgs at the end of this mail.

I noticed that the VM on the Xeon runs at 100% interrupt according to
top / systat, but then found out the VM on the i7 is (almost) the
same, this one runs at 80-90% interrupt.

Then I noticed that the interrupt rate on the i7 guest is half that of
the Xeon guest:

All machines (real and virtual) run recent snaps (less than two weeks
old).

This interrupt rate suggests that the hint from Alexander Bluhm[3] in
the old thread from May last year may solve this, but I'm not quite
sure why the VM on the i7 has half the rate of the VM on the Xeon.

So I've updated my source tree and built a new kernel with HZ=50 to
test on the Xeon VM.  It's pretty soon (uptime is less than an hour),
but it looks like this hasn't helped: interrupt rate is 50 clock / 50
rtc (~100 total) but ntpd is still unable to correct the clockdrift.
One "benefit" is that the VM now runs at ~70-80% interrupt instead of
the 100% with the stock kernel.

It seems that I configured something somewhere that I now forgot
about; it's not in the kernel on the i7 or the VM there, as they both
run stock snapshot kernels.  So .. why is the i7-guest running with 50
interrupts per second for the clock on a default kernel while I need
to recompile with HZ=50 to achieve that on the Xeon VM?

Included are dmesg's from all four machines.
