Is there a website or something out there recommending this sort of setup?

That's true of everything, not just partitions schemes!

 "There are an infinite number of possible configurations, only a subset
  of which are tested.  The further you deviate from the recommended 
  setups, the more likely you'll find a configuration for which *you* are 
  the tester.  You'll have to be the judge whether the value you get from 
  your particular deviation is worth the risks and costs of doing so."

Would that have changed your decision process _before_ you encountered the 
problem?

It's such a broad warning that I can't believe it'll be generally 
effective except as a post-facto "we told you so!"...which is not often 
appreciated.  :(
