I started working at systems where /, /usr, /var, /tmp where all mount points for different disks. ... but for over 15 years I didn't see any machine which needed splitting of / and /usr on seperate disks/partitions ... separating /var and /tmp from / and /usr yes, this is still used, especially at those solid state disk installations :-) --> I'm currently doing one
