That is why I called it "depends on usage", with initramfs and reiserfs in mind. ... but not all times you can use such file systems. In cases where you are stuck on standard ext2/3/4 file systems without trunk merging the binary versions could be more space efficient. That's why I called it "optional", let the system implementer decide.
