Let me point out a few things about this. First, this is called a Public
Service Net, not a rag chew, training or how to net. With most public
service nets are for training for disasters or emergencies that ham radio
come to play. This is the main reason we had access to the Sugarland
community center for so many years was that we provided emergency
communications for FBC in event of a disaster. Communications nets are check
in and check out to show your there if needed, Other communications is
discouraged in emergency.
Now, having said that, I think additional training and other things are
great on the net, in addition to check ins. If what you provide is
interesting, people will stick around to hear it. When the ARRL news is/was
played, many had heard it on other nets, read it online, or just were not
interested.
I will point out other reasons for not staying around to the end of the
net. I myself will stay at the shop and check in to the net. I will then
listen to the net as I drive home. I am too far to reply in my mobile with a
good signal, but have no problem at the shop. I have no radio at my home due
to location. If I have worked a long day, by 8:00 PM I want to go home not
sit for another hour at work.
Some of you are retired or work at home, but the majority of us bust
butt all day. Glad to get home, do not mind checking into the net but may
want to spend the evening with wife and kids as apposed to an hour on the
radio. These people have there priorities in the right order.
Others may check in on the way home but not fire the home rig (if they
have one) to stay with the net till end.
One final reason some will check in but not replay later in the net is
some new hams and several long time hams may like the formal check in
process but not feel comfortable participating further. I know this for a
FACT. My best friend who recently passed away, always checked into the BVARC
net but seldom responded to calls later in the net. I listen to the repeater
a lot but seldom talked. He had a ticket for over 10 yrs. There are several
other hams just like him in BVARC.
I think we need to welcome ALL hams, new and old, to check in. I may
only be a mark on your paper, but this club should welcome all.

All of these are great questions but many cannot be clearly explained
without a visual component. i.e., a slideshow or power point. Some are
simply one sentence answers. Most require preparation to properly answer.
Next week is my turn in the bucket. I am going to tackle one or two of the
simple ones. I also have access to a webinar account that I would be
willing to offer up if someone wants to do a slide show on the net.
What peeves me highly are:
People who check in and out in the same breath. - If you are going to do
that, don't bother. Why? Do you think your call sign goes in to some giant
eternal ledger that counts for perfect attendance? It doesn't. I keep a
count of the check-ins and send that to K5CAM. Just the count. No call
signs.
It's like going to a club meeting at the masonic lodge, walking in the door
and then leaving. Sound silly? As far as I am concerned it's the same
thing.
If you don't like the topic, OK. I get it. You don't have to stick around
but at least wait till you find out what the topic is about. Otherwise, it's
just plain rude.
If we are going to have education and training I think the way the net is
handled will have to be different. More of a round table discussion and
less of just going down the list of check-ins.

Rick,
I generally don't check into the Monday night net because of many reasons
which I'd prefer to not put in print. If something like this were done more
often, maybe I would indeed check in.
I especially like "How antennas work?" Maybe there is not enough subject
matter on this topic to make justify a full presentation, but do you think
you can cover that in 5 or 10 minutes as a filler at a meeting - Hi, hi.

BVARC Monday Night Net ( 146.94) 27 total checkins.
I asked the question last evening: "What do you want to know in Ham Radio
that you do not know now?"
The responses from those that hung around are below. Note: most stations
did not stay for the duration - they checked in and boogied due to - the bad
topic, dinner was served, nagging XYL...
Topics suggested / answers needed:
Digital Modes ?
ATV - How is it transmitted?
How to tie logging programs to the radio for automatic input of frequency,
etc.?
How antennas work?
HF Tuner Construction techniques?
Using Logging programs - setup etc.?
Data interfacning like the CAT system. How does it work?
Is there an easier way to learn the test material beside memorization?
What is "traffic" on a net?
How do you tune a tube type amp?
How do you use EZNEC to design antennas?
Why is there not a class to study for the Extra license?
Why do DX'ers QRM the DX station?
How do you waterproof all of your outside connections, external tuners,
etc.?
Excellent range of questions and answers needed by BVARC members.
"Enquiring minds want to know"...Mr. VP and program coordinator.
Thanks to all that stuck around and provided input for Jon to act upon.
