glands.

So what happens if you avoid Outlook(tm) entirely by using Windows7(tm) and the
ISP ( Service Provider, eg. Comcast ) mail system?

( I may be about to find out, once the new refurb HP8570P machine is *backed-up
properly* ).

There is that. Of course, Office updates automatically if you're a Home Office
subscriber.

I've had win10 on all but one of my several computers for a year now. They give
very little trouble. However, unless you figure out how disable automatic
updates, you will occasionally find that everything is running sluggishly for a
while while an update occurs in the background. Also I find that Outlook 2003
too often locks up, needing a repair executed from the Programs page under
Control Panel.

Ah, another voice of sanity heard. I suppose this is where I unfurl my flag of

Of course, that won’t ever happen, partly because companies would go bankrupt
waiting for potential customers to pass the requisite tests! Hams, in
aggregate, are a bunch of old white guys, including me. Statistically speaking,
we’re probably not the sharpest knives in the drawer of mental agility, and
really understanding computers isn't as trivial as companies would want. There
are exceptions, but I’d bet heavily that the reasons those “8.1” apps Jo
couldn't get to run in Windows 10 all boil down to user error. I can be so
confident about that because Windows 10 is Windows 8.1 reworked a bit.
Microsoft literally cannot totally rewrite Windows because backward
compatibility keeps them profitable.

I cannot speak for other hams as individuals, but understanding computers isn't
optional for me. Computers are what enable me to function; I am the one who
suffers if I can’t resolve a software issue I’m having. Some of you have heard
me on-air, and guess who wrote that application. To be clear, it’s constructed
of commercial components, but I did the constructing so I have to maintain a
good general understanding of Windows internals. As one result, I always know
when falsehoods and half-truths about Windows start swirling around.

I just put 10 on my last PC at home yesterday.

It took about 4 hours to install and reboot, appeared to get stuck many times
during the process.

Ran like CRAP for the first 20, then rebooted, worked good for a few, then CRAP
again, rebooted.

Basically its installing a whole load of drivers and such during the first few
boots, so make sure you dont need the computer immediately after for anything
urgent. About 3 reboots and its just like my other w10 machines, just fine.

I tried windows 10 and had more nightmares than carter's little liver pills.
STICK with 8.1. I had to take my tower to Geek squad to get it fixed and they
reinstalled 8.1 again. I had apps that would not open, and all sorts of other
stuff too many to mention here, so stick with 8.1
