While seeking police scanners recently, BVARC member Larry Riendeau recommended the app Broadcastify. I wanted to say a public “thank you” for the recommendation because it will undoubtedly fill the gap until I find something that would work around Houston, and it’s even likely that with Broadcastify we may decided that’s as much as we need.
I do find the audio slightly clipped sounding. It’s not garbled or covered by static at all, but it doesn’t sound like the full sine wave of the voices. I’m not certain if that’s a very accurate way to describe it. It’s an unusual “distortion”, and not enough to prevent it being useful, but enough to make me wonder if physical radios would be clearer. I’ll have to get in front of one for a demo to find out. Anyway, thanks, Larry Riendeau. We are certainly getting plenty of good out of Broadcastify. At a recent event, the subject of police/fire/city scanners came up, and we decided we would chase some up and listen now and then. BVARC seemed like a place to start where we might find someone who already had one or more scanners, known to work around Houston, and gathering dust while their more modern replacements stay busy. If you have one or two such scanners that might be happy to back in active service, let me know and let's talk price. We each set a tentative budget of about $200, hoping that we might find something really nice in used gear. One of us will set up at home. The other would like to be able to move around, so remarks on mobile versus handheld are very welcome. Thanks in advance for info, tips, gear offers, anything else relevant.
