Having been in a, similar, service-based business myself, the simple fact is that you need to have a consistent flow of sales to support salary and overhead. That said, fewer hams are all shopping for the best price for equipment and supplies, therefore buying from the big boys online. On top of that, manufacturer's like to pay flat-rate for repairs, which is normally OK and its a hard-sell to convince them to pay for those difficult troubleshooting jobs, such as intermittent issues. So for a brick and mortar store with fixed costs (rent and utilities, insurance), inventory, tools, test equipment, salaries, manufacturers'-required training, etc., its just not a viable startup for anyone today. Some of us remember Heathkit stores, had a virtual monopoly on their gear and no shortage of customer-built-incorrectly repairs and still closed its doors years ago. I elected factory-authorized field-service repair for large UPS systems.
