EFHWs are noisier than for example dipoles. EFHWs noise primarily stems from
their unbalanced nature and the potential for the feedline to act as an
extension of the antenna. Local noise sources—such as switching power supplies,
LED lights, inverters, transformers or electrical appliances—couple more easily
into the system via the feedline or the lack of a true counterpoise. A dipole,
by contrast, benefits from its balanced design, which can reject some of the
noise when paired with good build practices (e.g., a balun and symmetrical
placement).

RF Chokes can also dramatically help not to mention keep the RF feedback down
when over QRP powers.

Right now Im running an 80-10 efhw that I built for around $35. It works well,
but my noise floor is crazy on below 20m. Antennas aren’t too bad to build
especially end feds and dipoles. If you need any help just message me.

As a heads up, on April 5th, about 12pm, BVARC will have an HF hands on
orientation at the Bayland Community Center (after the license testing
session). We'll have at least one HF station available (SSB and/or CW) and
allow for a hands on experience to any who would like to attend. We're
especially focusing on the newly licensed, as an overview and an operating
opportunity. Food will be provided (right Scotty and Daphne?).

17 or 25ft whip, 40-10 EFHW or a DX commander. All are portable options.
If you attend the Houston POTA event odds are you will see examples of each
of these.

Hi everyone,

I am still in the research mode for my first HF radio, and this shared
perspectives are helpful. Any thoughts or suggestions on an antenna for a home,
i.e. leave outside and can take down and move if needed?

If you had a choice of 3 hf radios, what would your pick be and why?

1. Icom IC7300
2. Yaesu DX10
3. Yaesu 991
