Hey all, late last Saturday we tried a cloned drive in one of the
recently-donated Compaq Deskpros. If we could get it to work, we have
a stack of identical or nearly-so machines, which should make life
easier (good suggestion, Don). The only issue is that particular
onboard sound device isn't supported under the existing Debian image.
The device is ESS audio drive, ES1869f. Don Head did some searching,
and determined that the solution is to update ALSA, and then the
driver should be included. Here's a link that seems to outline how to
do this:
<http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?
company=ESS+Technology&card=.&chip=ES18xx&module=es18xx>
The driver we want is snd-es18xx.

Don's suggestions are good ones:
- look for groups of identical (or close to) machines
- get onboard sound working whenever possible. We don't have many
sound cards.

Let's try this on Saturday (unless some ambitious soul stops by the
shop and tackles it beforehand). If it works, we're well on our way
to getting the next set of graduate machines finished as well.

Theresa
