In real life there is no DOS anything.... Never waste time in learning the intricate tricks (like direct video memory access, TSR, Memory hacks using MCB ... etc). They wont be useful in your professional life. Of course, you can do them, if you consider them as fun.
As for DOS user interface, you must be able to download a lotz of DOS UI library. I used to use the one i personally developed during my school days.
