Are you talking about Embedded Systems?
If this is the case, here's a rough answer:
A computer is called an Embedded System if it's an integral part of a
bigger machine, such as the controller of a washing machine. It's
named like this because it is "embedded" into some greater system to
perform greater tasks. Or the computer built into many modern cars,
which controls engine ignition, radio, TV, electric window openers,
and the like.
