In general Embedded systems are limited to a specific application.
  Example:
#1. Washing machine has internally a Embedded systems that performs the
Fuzzylogic related to washing machine.

#2. A security system, it does only the job of a security system.

When you run a program in a PC it can be a word processor or a Multimedia
program or a Browser and many more (its not specific, it can do almost anything
depending on your PC's hardware capability).

Embedded systems can vary with a single microprocessor / controller based
system to a multi processor system. Most of the embedded systems nowadays run
an OS. they definitely have limited RAM/ROM in many cases. Using an OS makes
the system more dependable and deterministic in what could happen next. (The
developer can program it in such a way the tasks are synchronised and run
deterministically). File systems are required based on the application.

Embedded systems based on high end RTOS supports file systems.

Every electronic device around us contain an embedded sytem (TV / Music
System / AirCon / CAR / Mobile phone).

In many cases the Memory is internal (RAM/ROM) to the microcontroller. This
is based on the application size.

          Hey,
The answer would be very much varying. Going by the literal "Embedded" means
something inserted sort of into some other. Like jewels are embedded into
necklaces or any pacemaker into human body.
When we go for digital control we use controllers/processors which forms part
of the entire device.
Now a program is embedded means the compiled file has beed converted into .hex
file and has been flashed/burnt into a controller/processor.
Thanks
